Welcome to Sycamore Class
We are Year One and Year Two at Downe Primary. Our teachers are Miss Westlake and Mr Ferguson.
In our Year 1 and 2 classes, children thrive in a stimulating and supportive environment where learning is tailored to each child’s needs. We follow a varied and carefully adapted curriculum designed to challenge and inspire, ensuring every pupil reaches their full potential. Through a blend of creative topics, hands-on activities, and cross-curricular learning, children are encouraged to think independently, build confidence, and develop a lifelong love for learning.
A key focus in our early literacy development is the use of the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme. This structured and dynamic approach supports children in mastering essential reading and writing skills with confidence and enthusiasm. Daily phonics sessions are fun, fast-paced, and targeted, enabling all children to make excellent progress regardless of their starting point.
In addition to our rich classroom learning, all children in Year 1 and 2 enjoy weekly Forest School sessions, taking full advantage of our vast and well-equipped outdoor learning space. Here, they develop teamwork, resilience, and curiosity while engaging with nature through activities such as den building, natural art, and mini-beast exploration. This outdoor learning complements our classroom teaching beautifully and plays a vital role in nurturing well-rounded, happy learners.
