Belvedere Junior School

Our aspiration is that all Belvedere Junior School children see themselves as musicians through our teaching of music.

The new National Curriculum for Music states:

'Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.'

Mrs Natalie Murray, our specialist music teacher, provides all year groups with a dedicated music lesson each week, often linked to the IPC topics.  Each music lesson is active and practical and allows children opportunities to develop their skills in singing and with a range of instruments, including tuned and untuned percussion and keyboards.   During music lessons, children respond to a wide variety of high quality music and engage in performance, composition and transcription.

Weekly singing assemblies are an important feature for all our children within school and regular concerts are held to showcase our musicians' talent, giving them the opportunity to gain confidence and experience performing in front of an audience.  

Many children have the opportunity to learn to play violin or guitar, thanks to our talented instrumental teachers provided by the Bexley Music Service​.

Live music experiences come, not only from our own talented musicians, but also through visits from professional musicians and our involvement in exciting events such as our regular carol singing engagements at Bluewater and Bexleyheath shopping centres and the Young Voices concerts at the 02 arena.

Our aim is for music to become a way of life at Belvedere Junior School and for our children to develop a love and understanding of music which they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.
